VMware Converter Enterprise Update 2

Some very nice new features in the latest update to converter. One that I am very happy about is the ability to split a single disk into multiple VMDK files. For example if a physical server has one 72 GB drive that has a 20 GB C drive and a 45 GB D drive. In the previous version a single VMDK with two partitions would have been created. This was a pain because it made it difficult to extend a volume. Now there is a new check box in the disk selection screen that lets you split those two partitions into two separate VMDK files.

Citrix XenDesktop 2

The new version of Citrix XenDesktop is the first VDI solution that I am excited about. I am excited about it becuase of these two reasons:

  • End-to-end ICA connectivity – all of the other VDI solutions use either RDP or some proprietary protocol that only works well on LAN. ICA is a proven potocol that has been used for over 10 years in the SCB environment. ICA brings features like UPD Print driver, SpeedScreen, client device mappings and WAN optimizations.
  • Provisioning Server – Citrix Desktop is the only VDI solution that offers true image management with the integration of Citrix Provisioning Server (PVS) PVS allows you to have one read only image that all the XP/Vista VMs to boot off of. This can save lots of storage space and administration time managing hundreds of XP images.

I will be posting more information on Citrix XenDesktop in the comming weeks.
